If you wish to visit Lake Como, you can start your tour from Como, the city that gives its name to the lake, with its valuable monuments, the charming old town and the picturesque views.

Among the most beautiful and ancient places of Como there is certainly Piazza del Duomo, with its beautiful cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, one of the most beautiful monuments of northern Italy. Begun in 1396, the Cathedral was completed in 1740 with the elevation of the great Baroque dome designed by the architect Filippo Juvarra. The interior of the church is in Gothic style and preserves numerous works of art.

Next to the cathedral we find the elegant arches of the Palazzo del Broletto, the fifteenth-century municipal building, which creates one of the most evocative views in Como. Currently the Palazzo del Broletto, owned by the city, is home to art exhibitions and congresses. The old Civic Tower is set against the building, whose bells were once used to gather the citizens in front of the town hall.

From the cathedral you reach the nearby Piazza Verdi with its Teatro Sociale, a meeting place for music and entertainment lovers. The theater was built in the neoclassical style in the nineteenth century and every year offers to visitors a rich season of opera and prose.

Another important and beautiful church to visit is the Basilica of Sant’Abbondio: a magnificent example of Lombard Romanesque architecture built at the end of the 11th century.

In Como we also find the Tempio Voltiano, a building in the form of a neoclassical temple built on the lakefront to celebrate the figure and the work of the great physicist Alessandro Volta. The museum was erected on the occasion of the first centenary of the death of the inventor of the battery (1927) to house inside heirlooms and instruments belonging to the scientist.

The path of the Viandante is a hiking route of about 40 km, which runs along the eastern shore of Lake Como. The trail begins in Abbadia Lariana and touches several towns (Mandello del Lario, Varenna, Bellano, Dervio, Colico) to get to Piantedo. Being very long it must be done in stages.
